Welcome to Hong Kong!

Sunday, June 28 - Tuesday, June 30

I left for Hong Kong on Sunday, June 28th at 3 PM and arrived in Hong Kong on Monday, June 29th at 7 PM. My study abroad program will last until the beginning of August at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

I was greeted at the airport by CUHK students who took us in a bus to our university. We were in the bus for about an hour, and since it was dark, it was difficult to get our bearings, but we would soon learn that CUHK is located North of Hong Kong Island in Sha Tin, and is about an hour commute by bus, MTR, and ferry into Central Hong Kong.

CUHK is located on a mountain with a picturesque landscape of surrounding mountains and water. Although quite a distance from the center of Hong Kong, the area is serene and beautiful.
We have found ourselves cursing the mountain we live on several times, as it is an hour walk from our hall, Grace Tien, to the MTR "University" station. There is a bus that travels throughout the campus, but it is unreliable.

On my first full day at CUHK we had an orientation session with the International Summer School program leaders, were able to explore campus, register for our program, and connect to the internet. I spent the afternoon at Sha Tin plaza, which is two MTR stops away from school to buy some things that I hadn't brought with me. The "plaza"/mall is connected to the MTR station, and is about 6 stories tall with everything imaginable including; Lacoste, Armani, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, cell phone stores, etc...

We spent our first night out on LKF (Lan Kwai Fong Street), which is a very popular place to go out. It was Canada day, and it was wild, so a few of us enjoyed just walking around and taking in Hong Kong - we have a great summer ahead!
